MIXED MEDIA

Life is a perpetual state of change and evolution. Nothing remains the same over any extended period of time. I have an appreciation and affinity for the hidden potential that resides in the discarded remnants of once poignant things. Bits and pieces that no longer appear to have any intrinsic value spark my curiosity and inquiry. Vintage textiles, reclaimed teak, oxidised copper complete my pallet and are incorporated into new work. Work that reexamines what we define as beauty. Salvaging stories from their past to shape the stories yet to tell.

“It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see.”

AMERICANA SERIES
SOCIETY AMUSED

Socially complex and emotionally layered, this series is an exploration into human conditioning. Dissecting pre-existing notions associated with symbols, popular icons, and phrases, I wanted to re-address visual images and take them beyond their literal meaning, to play with the very institutions they represent and in some cases point out the hypocrisies.

“When we blindly adopt a religion, a political system, a literary dogma, we become automatons. we cease to grow.”

UNEXAMINED WORDS
THE ENTANGLED WEB

Language is a system of shapes, symbols and signs that have meaning when they are organized and put into context. What happens when that organization is dismantled?

I have respect for the power of words, temporary and ephemeral. Words have the capacity to build bridges across incomprehension and chaos but they are also the vehicle that drives deception.

This installation takes away the vapid chatter, empty words and useless questions and leaves us with a search for truth and a moment of stillness.

Let this space be the place you can lay down the tangled questions to deconstruct the stories, go beyond the words and to listen deeply.

“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.”
Peter Drucker

ENCAUSTIC WAX
EMBEDDED PATTERNS

A visceral series that takes its form from the lines of life. The intoxicating medium is an integral part of the work, as are impulses and accidents. I play with depth, foreground, pattern and emotion. It is a process of building up and melting down, carving into and dripping over. Building layers that accumulate texture while gathering elements and images of juxtaposition that will forever swim beneath the surface. Some images dominate the space, while others recede like a whisper, quiet but insistent.

Loaded with metaphors, and fused into a harmonious whole, the process is as sweet and challenging as life itself.

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”
Aristotle
